What is Sport Development all about?

Sport Wanganui's focus in the area of sport development is all about helping Regional sport organisations, associations and clubs develop their structure and systems. So they have more time to get about doing what we all want to do in sport play or compete.

We can assist with setting up these systems and helping groups to roll them out to their codes and local communities. We do have specific outcomes we need to achieve for Sparc and these are primarily about having effective sport delivery systems in our region.

In addition to these as a trust we have chosen to focus on helping sports to develop through. SPARC has recently announced a list of targeted sports that they will be working with in more depth and part of our requirements are to follow this direction. This does not mean we will only be working with these sports or ignored non targeted sports, but that we need to prioritse how we do this.

Our strategic plan and direction

As part of our new strategic plan and also in line with SPARC's new focus for Regional sport trusts Sport Wanganui is looking to take a more focused approach to sport development in the region. This will mean working specifically with 7 targeted national sports as well as 2 or 3 regionally critical or significant sports.

The 7 targeted national sports are - Rugby, Football, Netball, Hockey, Rugby League, Cricket and Gymsports

Regional critical sports will be chosen and announced in the next couple of months in consulation with prospective sports and after satisfying a number of sport development criteria.

Targeted and regionally critical sports will have access to a specifc staffing resource to assist with a wide range of sport development, coaching and related activities.
