GRx Success Story
A Wanganui Green Prescription Success Story
Meet 62 year old Lorraine Hartley from Wanganui. Lorraine was given a Green Prescription by her Doctor in 2008 and commenced walking in the pool until one day at the Splash Centre she suffered a heart attack in the changing rooms. Lorraine can not speak highly enough of the assistance she received from the Splash Centre life guards. A Life guard stayed with her while another rang her sons to let them know what had happened.
Lorraine was given a double heart bypass and an aorta valve replacement, but suffered problems after developing an infection where they had taken a vein out of her leg for her heart bypass which took six months to heal. After recovering she needed to build her stamina up again so received another Green Prescription in 2009. She put off doing any activity through her script until the Green Prescription Support person rang and convinced Lorraine that she needed to become physically active.
Lorraine now walks the pool three times a week, goes to Tai Chi classes and attends the gym circuit at the Splash Centre two days a week. Lorraine advises that when she saw details for the gym circuit she thought “I could do that”, but she tells us that the first time she attempted it she thought she wasn’t going to survive! But slowly she got into it and persevered and thoroughly enjoys the group situation; It has made Lorraine more confident with gym activity. With 35 per cent of her heart dead and suffering from diabetes she has found with being physically active she can walk further, move more freely and her sugar levels are stable. She is feeling good and more energetic.
Lorraine, you’re a champion.
